Dr. Flowers is a cartoonist and ethnographer. She is the author of the book Hot Comb, a collection of "haunting short stories about the Black experience that go far beyond hair and beauty, into issues of race, class, gender, and family bonds". 

She also holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she wrote her dissertation as a comic (mostly).

 

She is introduced on today's show by cartoonist & professor Lynda Barry, her colleague & fan.
